Johnston Marklee has unveiled a bold architectural statement in Phoenix, Arizona, as he completes 'democratic by nature' Ray Phoenix—a residential tower clad in a mint-green metallic finish inspired by the desert landscape. This project, co-developed by New York developer Ray and Kansas-based Vela, sits in the city’s Roosevelt Row Arts District, offering 401 units and rising 26 storeys. Its design draws from the desert’s natural textures and subtle contrasts, creating a harmonious blend with the surrounding environment. The building’s core is a consistent grid layout, which unites living units, communal spaces, and amenity areas. A majority of its units feature studio apartments, while one-bedroom and two-bedroom options exist throughout. Amenities include a gym, kitchen, social lounge, and resort-style pool with seating—designed by Grace Fuller Design. The terraces and native plantings reflect a deep connection to the region’s arid climate, emphasizing sustainability and cultural authenticity. The interior showcases materials like concrete, brick, and glazed tile, reflecting Ray’s mission to merge art and design with residential life. The lobby features a mural by Alex Israel, celebrating local flora. Beyond Phoenix, Johnston Marklee recently completed a guesthouse for Danish furniture brand Vipp and another tower in downtown, showcasing his commitment to integrating sustainable and community-focused architecture. This project challenges traditional urban development norms while reinforcing the idea that design can be inclusive and responsive to local ecosystems.
